I a world full of connected devices, i am pretty sure that at-least once in your life your life you might have asked this question to yourself.
"Are We Safe ?"
Nowadays it is really difficult to find a person who doesn't have a smartphone. Our smartphones are equipped with features which was once way beyond our imagination or thoughts. They are evolving... at an alarming rate. People were once afraid if govt's were tapping their cellphones and now we trust these devices and private firms with all our data and personal information.
Smartphones are now having almost all the abilities which made us humans unique. They can see, hear, respond, react and what not ?
Most tech companies and gadgets manufactures are concentrating their efforts on creating the best voice assistant.
Apple came up with "Siri", Amazon's "Alexa", Microsoft's "Cortana", Google's "google now" and Samsung's "Bixby" are some of the popular attempts to replicate the best voice assistants and the one thing they have in common which is making me worry is the fact that all are capable of activating themselves when they hear our voice.
Say for example, if Siri is responding back when i say "Hey Siri", It should be listening to all my conversations in background and responds when it recognizes that particular keyword. Should we be concerned ?
We conducted an experiment once with my Android smartphone after seeing ads related to products in our conversation. I was having a conversation with my friend regarding the purchase of a new shoe and we went on talking about various types of shoes and colors and brands and the talk went on for a long time. After a while when i was surfing through my facebook, i was surprised to see ads of the same product we were discussing about. I am pretty sure most of you might have had similar experience. After this we decided to perform the same multiple times and we experienced similar results. Yes it might be helping us in many ways to shop or optimizing our search queries, at the same time it concerns me... Are we safe ? Is this a bigger threat ?
Let's see...
